The moon Festival takes place every September in China since the Shang Dynasty (c. 16th to 10th century BCE) to celebrate the completion of the harvest. In ancient times, the people of China believed the moon to have rejuvenating qualities.
This festival is a time to gather, give thanks, and pray. It is a time for reflection of what has happened and to hope for what is yet to come. It is also not surprisingly a time to celebrate weddings! Traditionally, the festival is a time to celebrate the reaping of wheat and rice by offering foods to loved ones reminiscent of the moon. Outdoor gatherings are very common this season when friends and loved ones gather to eat delicious mooncakes (their roundness symbolizes unity and completeness, and sharing these with family members symbolizes unity of family) and watch the moon together. Traditions vary by region, but burning incense in reverence to deities and performing dragon and lion dances is quite common.
One of our favorite parts of this beautiful event is the carrying of incandescent, fiery Chinese lanterns. Sometimes a riddle is written on the lantern and people have to guess the answers. Originating as early as 250 B.C., Chinese lanterns are an important symbol of long life.
