 Gibraltar is located on the Southern end of the Iberian Peninsula and is the gateway from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. It was named 'Jbel al-Tarik' (Mountain of Tarik) in 711, after the Moorish leader who captured it, and the name has stuck for more than one thousand years. Being right at the gateway to the Mediterranean, Gibraltar is strategically a place of mayor importance. In 1704 the British occupied it, and according to international treaties it is part of the United Kingdom ever since. Only in 1985, after 16 years of isolation, frontiers were re-opened to enter from mainland Spain.
Gibraltar has got a length of 4.5 km and is 1.5 km wide. Today, there are living about 30,000 inhabitants. Gibraltar - also called 'The Rock' because of its 425 m high rock - is a popular sightseeing destination; nowadays there are direct flights into Gibraltar from London, Madrid and Barcelona. It is also a very popular shopping paradise - all goods and services are tax-free!
